ADVANTAGES OF OWNING A MEAT GRINDER

Meat grinders have numerous advantages but here are a few:

  • It’s safer

Do you think the prepackaged burger found in supermarkets is 100% beef as they say? Some products may say they are pure beef, but a lot of cheaper ones contain hundred, even thousands of additives and meat extenders, and not the nicest bits either. Yikes!

  • Better flavor

Did you know it’s much better to purchase ground beef from your butcher in a deli? You can actually pick the part of the cow that you want to grind.

You can also control the fat content. But a deli shop is a dying art in markets because they are being overthrown by bigger supermarkets which produces burgers in massive amounts. If you own a meat grinder, you can actually replicate a butcher in a deli.

  • Better texture

How long do you think that prepackaged burger has been sitting in the counter? One day? Two weeks? One month?!

The more it sits there, the less fresh it is. Slowly, it’s being compressed, oxidized, and the bacteria accumulates, infecting the meat. Do you really want to eat that? Grinding your own fresh meat keeps the meat nice and loose, maintaining the moisture and texture when cooked.

  • It’s versatile

Surprise that it can grind different foods than meat? It can be an excellent vegetable grinder for pickles and relishes. Tired of chopping dried fruit? The meat grinder is here to help! Just place it in and let the magic happen. It can also grind cheeses for tasty pimientos.

  • It’s cool

Your neighbors will line up on your doorstep when they learn that you grind your own meat. You’ll be a hit with the ladies. Nothing manlier than butchering and grinding your own meat *wink* *wink*.

While it’s possible to use a food processor, or grinding it by hand with a knife, owning your own meat grinder is the best (and only) option if you plan on grinding your meat for making a burger. I’ll show you a beginner’s guide to selecting the best manual meat grinder, cleaning, and using it later on.

PARTS OF A MEAT GRINDER

Meat grinders are made up of these parts:

The pusher and hopper, this is where you place the cubes of meat. The pusher is used to push the meat down the tube, hence the name. Generally, when you buy a meat grinder, there is a tray located on top of the tube where you can place the meat before it can be pushed into the grinder. The larger the tray, the more batches of meat you can grind.

The screw is the main component of a meat grinder because it pushes the meat steadily down the shaft, towards the grinding blades.

The plate and blade are the parts that do the actual grinding. Small cross-shaped with a sharp edge on each arm, the blade rotates against the plate and shreds the meat. A flat piece of metal with holes in the plate does the mincing of the meat.

When the screw forces the meat into the hole, the blade cuts into a fine mince. Some meat grinders may differ in the size of holes; this determines the fineness of the final grind

The cover is a screw-shaped part of the meat grinder that keeps the blade and plate in its place as it chops.

When buying a meat grinder. There are a lot of types to choose from, other than the manual types. Below are some types to choose from.

TYPES OF MEAT GRINDERS

Manual Grinders

Manual meat grinders are the cheapest and most effective way to get good quality ground meat at home. They are great for budget saving people who don’t want to purchase an expensive stand mixer. You have two options:

Best Manual Meat Grinder

The bolt-mounted meat grinder is great if you have a wood work table or counter top. At less than $40, they last forever! That means burgers for 365 days (burger lover right here). For an even cheaper option but slightly less sturdy, at $30, the clamp-mounted meat grinder allows you to work on any table top.

Warning: The clamp-mounted grinder is less sturdy than the bolt-mounted one because it loosens up when you spin the lever while grinding the meat.

Stand Mixer Attachments

The great thing if you buy a stand mixer is you only have to worry about the grinding attachment. You also don’t have to worry about the grinding part because the machine will do it for you, just turn on the mixer and place the meat one by one and voila! Instant burgers in no time.

Stand mixers are ideal for making sausages. After grinding the meat, you can place it in the bowl then attach the paddle attachment and start mixing to develop make the meat compact instantly.

Stand Alone Grinders

This type of grinder is expensive (average $100). It features wider assortment plates, wider tubes to feed the meat, and bigger screw shafts that push the meat down the tube faster; the motor is only good as you pay for it.

I tried using both at the same time, and my stand mixer attachments worked better than the cheaper model of a stand alone grinder.

The one advantage of stand alone grinders is, if you’re trying to chop meat with a lot of connective tissue, it will grind faster because of its reverse function.

HOW TO USE AND CARE FOR YOUR MEAT GRINDER

  • Keep everything cold. Warm meat will stain the machine, fat will leak out, and it will come out pulpy and dry in texture. Submerge the parts in ice cold water for at least an hour before using (you can keep it in the freezer after it has been cleaned and air-dried). Keep chilled meat right before you grind.
  • Trim your meat well. Trim the bits of sinew in your meat; this is the number one cause of stains in the machine. Clean the blade thoroughly as it may dull over time if meat is not trimmed well.
  • Keep your blade sharp. A dull blade will not cut the meat and stain the machine. Luckily, you may sharpen your blade once a year only because over time; the metal grinds down each time you use it -- the contact between the blade and plate gets tighter and tighter causing the blade to sharpen itself.
  • Keep your plate clean. Make sure to remove and wash every part of the machine. Even a stainless steel model will tarnish over time if the parts are not cleaned properly. Wash it by hand with hot soapy water, dry it with a clean towel, and air dry.
  • Salt meat before grinding. When you add salt to the meat before grinding, it adds a whole different texture because the salt dissolves the protein, allowing the meat to crosslink with each other, making it tighter when grind, springier, and easy to form.

After my neighbor recommended ALISKID, I never looked back since. I would make hamburgers in bunches, and it was so easy to throw the different meats into the tube!

Not to mention how it would grind and mince them all together perfectly. Sorry mom I think my hamburgers are better than yours because of this machine.

This terrific grinder is a DIY multi-function machine that makes grinding easier and faster! It can crush any variety of meat from pork, chicken, fish, beef, and even fat. It can also grind different varieties of vegetables and fruits.

Made with high quality, heavy-duty plastic, and stainless steel, this grinder is guaranteed to withstand several years of grinding. The special blades grind the meat to a fine mince for that compact and delicious burger.

Additionally, it’s fairly easy to use; Simply chop the meat in small cubes, place it one by one while spinning the lever, and wait for the magic to happen.

It’s easy to clean too. Just disassemble each part then rinse it thoroughly after using, wash with warm soapy water, and pat dry with a clean towel.

This is the first meat grinder that I purchased, and I would have to say it’s very cute; the color reminds me of a 1950’s kitchen appliance -- the mint color pops inside my kitchen.

I am always looking for different ways to prepare our meals, and this mincer is absolutely perfect for it. I made chili last night, and of course, I used this mincer to grind the beef, and the quality of the minced meat was finer than salt. Joking aside, this machine is also perfect for meatballs and sausages.

It’s also very safe to use because the blade is completely inaccessible to the hands, so it’s likely that you won’t cut myself. I recommend this machine if you want to teach your children the art of grinding meat.

  • Durable
  • Easy to operate
  • Easy to clean up
  • Takes up minimal space
  • Fast grinding

This product is a great kitchen gadget to own or give as a gift because it’s very simple to assemble and disassemble. It only comes in four pieces, so you don’t have to worry about storing this in your kitchen.

What I really love about this is the color (I love blue) because it has a modern feel to it and it’s surprisingly lightweight too. The vacuum suction base locks in on any surface (wood, tiles, ceramic, etc.).

Portable and compact, you can bring this grinder at any picnic, gathering, or party; just disassemble each part, and you're good to go.

My kids love sausages especially the spicy ones, but I'm not thrilled buying the supermarket ones because it contains a lot of preservatives. After buying this product, I would make sausages all the time for them.

Via Amazon.com

This fairly cheap grinder is very easy to use. It produces perfect minced meat for burgers, sausages, chilies, meatloaf, etc.

The blade is protected by a plastic casing, so you don’t have to worry about cutting yourself while grinding the meat. Plus, it’s BPA free.

Also, it’s super easy to clean because all parts are water washable; just disassemble parts, and you’re good to go.

You don’t have to worry about the size of this machine because it can easily be stored in your kitchen cupboard as it only weights at 2 lbs and approximately 10x4x9 inches in size.

I wanted to buy my own meat grinder, but I have an unusually small kitchen, so I needed a smaller version of the machine, but I didn’t want to sacrifice quality. When I saw this product, I was immediately blown away.

Not only was the color so cute, it was also just the right size for my kitchen. But don’t be fooled by the size of this machine because it can keep up with the best out there. Meat grinding was a breeze -- just place it in the funnel spin the lever and wait for the minced meat to gush out.
